In our last vacation I decided to get a bit off my comfort zone and don’t take pictures with my digital camera, just video … which I’d love to share it with you in a future. But for now I’ll share a few pictures I took with my Nikon F100 film camera… I just used Kodak Portra 400 & Ektar 100 films.

For those who still do not know… Isla Holbox is a beautiful small island located off the coast of Quintana Roo in México. You can get to Isla Holbox by a Ferry operated from the town of Chiquilá. We hired transportation from Cancún Airport and drove us safe there. It took us around 2.5 hours to get to Chiquilá and then about 30 minutes ferry ride to Isla Holbox and it was well worth the journey!

Definitely one of the most pleasant surprises was Marvin’s hospitality. Everyone there seems so happy and friendly. He took the time to cook for us on several occasions. Fish, ceviche, lobster and even his signature guacamole, simply delicious!

The island itself is actually pretty long, about 40 km, but only part of it inhabited. There are no cars, and most people get around on foot, bycicle or take one of the many golf car taxis from the small town.

We took a day tour to visit the 3 islands… First stop, Yalahau, a clear and fresh eye of water. An awesome place to go swimming in the wilderness. Then Captain Johny took us to Bird & Passion Island, for those who have a passion for seeing birds in the wild these are the places for you. With a little luck you will see some flamingos out there…

The beaches are absolutely stunning, they are relatively empty, the water is warm and almost perfectly calm, in many places the water is ankle deep for a lot of meters from the shoreline, which is great if you have small kids & dogs. So why don’t grab a cerveza and lean back into a hammock?

The Sunsets on Isla Holbox are some of the most beautiful in the world, every night we watched the sun go down from Mandarina Beach Club while drinking fresh Mojitos. We also found that the best place to watch the sunset is near Punta Cocos, but we also enjoyed a small beach located almost at Punta Mosquitos. To get there you could rent a bike or even a golf car, it’s not so easy to move around with a 2 years old girl… ha ha

After the sun is going to set, we would recommend to walk around the town square, where all the action and best places to eat are located. We strongly recommend to try the amazing Four-Cheese Tortilla Española at Casa de la Tortilla or grab a delicious pizza at Hornito Argento. Don’t forget to try a Marquesita at one of the corners of the main square late at night.

The main attraction of the island is swimming with the WHALE Shark. These harmless peaceful creatures visit Holbox Island between May – September. At this time we didn’t have the opportunity to do it, so take note… the best time for this activity should be around July.

Hope you enjoy the pictures…
